Common Core Standards

In school-based speech-language therapy we provide services that will facilitate the students' academic achievement by targeting the Kentucky’s Early Childhood Standards for Language Arts for preschool students and the Kentucky Academic Standards for K-12 as reviewed below.

Kentucky’s Early Childhood Standards:  Language Arts (3s and 4s):

  • Standard 1: Demonstrates general skills and strategies of the communication process.
    • Benchmark 1.1: Uses nonverbal communication for a variety of purposes.
    • Benchmark 1.2: Uses language (verbal, signed, symbolic) for a variety of purposes. 
    • Benchmark 1.3: Communicates with increasing clarity and use of conventional grammar

Kentucky Academic Standards Guiding Principals for Language and Reading Foundational Skills:

  • Students will demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing and speaking.
  • Students will apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening.
  • Students will use a variety of strategies to determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases, consulting reference material when appropriate. Students will acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases sufficient for reading, writing, speaking and listening in order to be transition ready.
  • Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables and sounds (phonemes).
  • Read fluently (accuracy, speed, and prosody) on grade-level

Kentucky Academic Standards Interdisciplinary Literacy Practices:

  • Utilize receptive and expressive language arts to better understand self, others and the world.
  • Collaborate with others to create new meaning.
