Girls + Learning + Opportunities = Wisdom (G.L.O.W.)

Girls + Learning + Opportunities = Wisdom (G.L.O.W.)

With the help of our community partners, we were able to encourage the young women to become active citizens by building their self-esteem and confidence, increasing self-awareness, developing goal setting skills and assertion.   G.L.O.W. promotes the belief that every young woman can make a difference in her community.

A special thanks too: Mary Kay Sales Director, Kelly Cooper, who taught how to start your own business and become an entrepreneur.  Our girls worked on self-esteem while learning about skin care, getting a makeover and having the correct mind-set.  Chelsea Hurd and Jamie Ford, with Adanta, who taught the “do’s and don’ts” of teen dating, internet safety and having healthy relationships with friends, family and community.  Our students were surprised at what they learned on safety with the internet, apps, and popular websites.  Jennifer Owens is the Director of Somerset Community College Cosmetology School.  She invited our group to attend class and talk with current students about cosmetology.  They reviewed tuition cost, curriculum and then were treated to their own hair and nail session.  East West Karate sent Kari Jenkins to give our group self-defense lessons, as well as safety and emergency precautions for being out by yourself.

As part of a “give-back” initiative, our group learned of the ISSA Trust Foundation, in Jamaica.  This foundation builds medical facilities in Jamaica’s poorest areas.  They also help to sustain the Happy Hearts Early Childhood Learning Center in Negril.  This Early Childhood School is in desperate need of school supplies, clothing and school curriculum.  Our G.L.O.W. group has written letters of encouragement to the students there, and they will be sending them school supplies to help them with their needs.  Mrs. Crow will be visiting this facility and reading the letters to their students.

If you have a business that would like to contribute in helping support our G.L.O.W. activities, or would like to facilitate one of our future meetings, please let us know.
