English as a Second or Other Language Teacher

Diana E. Baker-Teacher of English as a Second or Other Language

Welcome to my page.

Bienvenido

I began serving students in the Somerset Independent School District in January 2007. My name is Diana E. Baker-Teacher of English as a Second or Other Language. I am an itinerant teacher serving this district’s multi-lingual student population at Hopkins Elementary School, Meece Middle School, and Somerset High School. School year 2011-2012 will be the beginning of my 20th year of teaching grades K-12.

My Bachelor’s Degree came from Eastern Kentucky University. I earned my Master’s Degree in School Counseling at Morehead State University. I completed a Rank 1 in School Counseling at Eastern Kentucky University and an Endorsement to teach English as a Second or Other Language at Georgetown College. I am currently completing a degree in Higher Education Administration and Leadership at the University of the Cumberlands.

My current schedule is below:

Somerset High School-Wednesday and Thursday
Meece Middle School-Friday and Monday
Hopkins Elementary School-Tuesday

Hopkins Elementary School is fortunate to have a full-time AmeriCorps Member to tutor and assist EL students in grades Kindergarten to grade 4.

My schedule was created to allow two consecutive days at the High School and Middle School to assist teachers in making content comprehensible.

*This schedule is flexible and can be rearranged if teachers or students need parent meetings, interpreter services, testing accommodations or alternate assignments planned for EL students.

I currently serve as the SEA building representative at Hopkins Elementary school. I can be reached via email at diana.baker@somerset.kyschools.us or by phone at 606-383-0375. Texting is preferred and is least disruptive to the students and classrooms.

I would like to offer teachers, students, and parents some web pages with many educational activities for students with limited English proficiency: www.1-language.com , www.a4esl.org, www.manythings.org.

Philosophy:

I believe that every child comes to me with the trust that I am here to teach, understand, and help each individual student to communicate and comprehend in order to meet our expectations and reach his or her personal communication and academic goals. I also make every attempt to express my deepest respect for both students and parents to encourage English Learners to embrace our language with confidence while maintaining personal pride in the cultural differences each family brings to our community.
