Somerset High School Principal
Welcome to Somerset High School and the 2018-2019 school year. My name is Charlie Brock and I am honored to serve as the Principal of Somerset High School. Our school is one of the oldest, most storied, and successful high schools in the state of Kentucky. Established in 1888, we are the home of the Briar Jumpers. Somerset High School has a great culture and atmosphere that makes it a very special place. Our main focal point is supporting and building relationships with students so we can help them reach their full potential as young men and women. Everything we do and every decision that is made is based on the simple concept of “what is best for our kids”.
Even though we have put an emphasis on having a caring environment, standards based learning is also a major focus. We believe it is essential that students master standards and become long term learners. Our faculty and students have worked tirelessly to make this one of the most exciting and successful academic era’s in our schools history. Over the past several years we have continued to grow as an academic institution. We continue to see an increase of our composite ACT scores every year. KOSSA pass rates continue to rise, and EOC and CCR scores also continue to improve from year to year. This progression has enabled us not only to be the top Distinguished High School in our area, but also has allowed us to be ranked the 15th best High School in the state by US News and World Daily Report. They also have us ranked nationally.
Our success has given me the opportunity to present at several state and local conferences over the past year. It truly is a pleasure to share our focus and how great our staff and students really are. I always get asked regarding instruction and data analysis, “what is Somerset doing differently to have all this success?” I present them with our vision and philosophy of what good data driven instruction looks like and how a focus on standard mastery is essential. I also remind them that none of this is possible if trust with staff and students is not in place and if there is not a specific focus on relationship building and investing in both staff and students.
The staff at SHS are friendly, inviting, hardworking, and always willing to go the extra mile on behalf of our students. This and many other things make our school a truly special place. I wake up every day and can’t wait to get to work. I really cannot put into words how lucky and honored I am to get to work with such a great staff and wonderful students each day. We continue to have lofty goals for the 2018-2019 school year and look forward to seeing what our students will accomplish in the classroom, on the fields, on the stage, and on our courts. “Go Jumpers!!”
