Upward Bound is currently accepting new students

The Somerset Community College Pulaski Upward Bound Program is currently accepting new students!

Who are we?

The Upward Bound Program is a college prep program for students that are typically underrepresented in higher education.  Specifically, we accept students that are potential first generation college students (neither parent has a four year degree) and students whose families fall within a federal income scale.  A portion of our students can be either first generation or meet the income guideline, but most would meet both.

Who do we serve?

The Pulaski UB Program serves 20 students from Somerset High School, 20 students from Southwestern High School, and 20 students from Pulaski County High School.

What do we offer students?

Everything college (and life) prep!  Academically, we offer instruction in math, science, English, and foreign language.  We provide free online tutoring (and arrange in-person if needed).  We provide free ACT prep, including bootcamps!  We also provide college exposure through college tours and a super cool on-campus residential experience at the University of Kentucky.  We assist with college admissions, FAFSA, scholarships, and all parts of the college going process.  We coordinate community service opportunities, travel to some really awesome places, and provide cultural experiences to enhance the students personal growth and development.  We focus on career development and encourage students to pursue their professional dreams.  Once a student graduates, we provide two free classes at SCC the summer before freshman year and also pay for the books for these classes.  Everything we offer to the students is completely FREE to them and their family!

How does this work among the pandemic?

Upward Bound can do VIRTUALLY anything!  We can do everything we would do in a normal year except for travel!  As long as you have a device, you can participate!  And, if you don’t have a device, we can provide one for you.  This year we have virtually toured WKU, UPike, SCC, UK, Columbia University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Yosemite National Park, Hawaii, Birmingham, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more!  We have still provided hands-on activities through supply packets to students!  We have still provided meals to students through the use of meal vouchers with local restaurants!

What do I get for participating?

Glad you asked! Students actually earn money for participating in our free activities!  Students can earn $40 per month from September – May and $120 for participating in the summer program!  Plus, you make new friendships, have some once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and become a valuable and important member of the Upward Bound family!

How do I apply?

Spots are limited and are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Students can pick up a paper application in their Guidance Counselor’s office or visit our website to complete the online application!  Once the application is complete, the UB staff will schedule an informal interview with the student and a parent/guardian.  If the student meets eligibility and wants to join, they are accepted and can begin participating immediately!

I am a teacher, how do I refer students to the program?

First, thank you for your support and for all of your hard work!  Teachers can refer students to the guidance office for applications if the student is in-person.  Or, teachers can post our video and the link to our online application on their Google Classrooms or send via email to their students.  Teachers can also send names of potential students directly to the Upward Bound staff and the UB staff will follow-up with the guidance office.  Either way is GREAT!  If emailing referrals, please send names to
