Somerset High School STRIDE students toured the Commonwealth Journal while learning about the various careers available in journalism. During the tour, Rob McCullough with the Commonwealth Journal explained how the newsroom functions on a daily basis and how the newspaper is laid out and printed for each days publication. Mr. McCullough explained that there are several opportunities available in addition to journalism careers that include: accounting, sales and advertising. STRIDES is a partnership between the Housing Authority of Somerset and Somerset High School Youth Service Center which exposes students to area businesses to learn about local careers. STRIDES stand for Students Taking Responsibility In Developing Employment Skills. Following the six week program, students are placed in a job shadowing experience in a career of interest to them. Participants then shadow an employee of the business during normal working hours and are exposed to the daily function of their career choice. The program tours included South KY RECC, Commonwealth Journal, UGN, Lake Cumberland Reginal Hospital and the Pulaski County Public Library where students will take an interviewing class.
