Somerset High School’s Drug Awareness club, Project Purple, sponsored an “Athlete’s vs. Addiction” night for their home game against Richmond Model on Friday, January 13th. The theme for the event was created to help raise awareness around the dangers of substance abuse, and encourage positive decision-making to navigate all of life’s challenges, which is an ongoing mission of the school’s club and its members. With the help of club sponsors Jennifer Johnson (SHS Director of Youth Services), Heather Baker (SHS Teacher), Jordan Hoseclaw (SHS School Safety Officer), and the student- members of Project Purple used this event to raise money for the local homeless shelter, Over My Head. The City of Somerset and Mayor Eddie Girdler helped with the event by sponsoring the t-shirts worn by players, staff, and students promoting the Athletes vs Addiction theme. Somerset High School and Project Purple would like to thank the City of Somerset, and Mayor Eddie Girdler for their support. SHS would also like to thank local business owner of “76 ink”, Doug Harney, for making the shirts, and a special thanks to the students and members of Project Purple for all of their hard work in hosting the event.
