Somerset Students Participate in Pegasus Parade

The Somerset High School Gifted and Talented Leadership Ambassadors would like to honor the history and the ARTS program at Somerset Independent Schools.  Somerset, also known as the Briar Jumpers, has a storied history beginning in the year 1888.

There have been many distinguished graduates from Somerset High School including the honorable US Senator John Sherman Cooper a well-known politician, jurist and diplomat.  He served as US Ambassador to India and then East Germany. He served two terms in the US Senate.  John Sherman Coopers family continues to support the school system and the local arts programs.  The float displays a portrait of this great statesman.



School Mascot, Cecil, is finishing a portrait of Triple Crown Winner, American Pharaoh, painted by 1st grade teacher Amanda Combs.  The float showcases some of the outstanding Visual and Performing Arts at Somerset.  Photos by Smlynch Photography, former students.   

Somerset High School, under the vision of principal, Wesley M. Cornett, revived the performing Arts in the fall of 2011. Currently the high school provides instruction in concert and competitive band, AP Music Theory, Drama, all levels of choral music, creative and specialized art instruction and dance teams. The middle and elementary schools also provide a comprehensive arts program for students. Private donations of $250,000, up-graded WB Jones Auditorium, built in 1963 at Somerset High School with state of the art sound, projection, lighting and seating.

Four Broadway quality musicals have been performed in the last four years. Since 2012, SHS has had 14 students chosen as All-State performers in both band and chorus; have been asked to perform at local churches and other public and private events and most recently our Vocal Ensemble was selected to perform the national anthem at the KHSAA Boys Sweet 16 basketball tournament championship game. The high school dance team has placed first in many competitions most recently named the 2016 Capital Cup Dance Ultimate Champions.
