Students are being led by Ms. Penley, SHS biology teacher, as they study the
importance of DNA and genetics in medicine, criminology, & agriculture.
These laboratory techniques are important because studying DNA has led to a greater understanding of genetic diseases such as cancer and how to find cures for these diseases. When applied to forensic science, the study of DNA is an important way to help solve crimes. The application and extension of techniques our students are learning has resulted in experts solving criminal cases by comparing DNA samples found on the crime scene with those from suspects.
The discovery of DNA has proven to be very important for agriculture. Americans spend a lower percentage of our income on food than much of the rest of the world in large part due to this technology. Scientists have used this knowledge to improve crop resistance to disease by genetically modifying them thus improving yields. Similar technology is currently used by the livestock industry to help produce hardier cattle and poultry with lower fat content than in previous years.
Kentucky has long played a major role in the study of DNA and genetics through horse and cattle breeding programs. In fact, much of our current understanding of genetics is based on scientific research done by Kentuckian Thomas Hunt Morgan who was born and grew up in Lexington. Morgan won the Nobel Prize in Physiology for Medicine in 1933 for his research on genetics. According to the “Kentucky by the Numbers” website published by UK, the market value of Products sold from the 1808 farms in Pulaski County is $39,740,000 (2007 data).
Furthermore, the study of genetics and DNA can lead to careers in medicine, agriculture, research, law enforcement, the military, technical sales, etc. This will translate into an enriched community.
We think you will agree, the Somerset 21
st
Century Program is providing valuable experiences for our children, thereby benefitting our entire community. (In the attached photo,

th
grader Adriana Ramirez a DNA extraction technique.)
