The microbiology lab is set up to resemble a college level laboratory with similar equipment and resources. Abigail Bastin is shown participating in a hand washing analysis while being supervised by Ms. Penley.
In a medical setting germs can be transmitted between patients if the healthcare workers do not adequately wash their hands. This exercise helps determine which cleansers are most effective at removing bacteria from the skin. The students will wash their hands, than press their hands into agar plates which will grow bacteria overnight. This reinforces the basic medical concept of not transmitting bacteria between patients in a clinical setting.
