               Now entering its 28th year, the Georgetown College Pre-college Academic Experience in Math and Science (PAEMS) is a 13 day residential program that provides academically motivated rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders educational opportunities in a college environment.

Camino Camp at EKU

EKU will host its first ever summer camp specifically for Latino/a students! Students will enjoy five days on campus where they will experience what life is like in the residence halls, meet professors, attend mock college classes, receive information on how to apply and receive financial aid, participate in recreational activities and bond with their peers. This camp is for high school students of all grade levels, with an emphasis on rising 11th and 12th graders. The camp will take place June 17- June 21, 2018. DECA Attends Regional Conference DECA Regional Conference

Somerset High School DECA Students attended the DECA Regional Conference on Friday, February 9th.  

Science Rocks at SHS Science Rocks

Gear Up hosted Jason Lindsay with Hooked On Science for “Science Rocks” at SHS.   Lindsay, a native of Paducah, Kentucky, is a former meteorologist who has taken his passion for bringing science to students around the Commonwealth and across America and Canada.   His goal is to show students that science is fun and interesting in hopes of sparking interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers and a lifelong passion for learning. 

SCC Preview Day SCC Diversity Day

The Office of Cultural Diversity at Somerset Community College hosted minority students to a Preview Day at SCC.  SHS seniors and Senior Counselor David Akin visited the Physical Therapist Assistant program, the 3D printing facility, and enjoyed the lunch provided by the college.

The Princess Prom Project Project Princess Prom

The Princess Prom Project will be held at First Baptist Church on March 9 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Students must sign up with Mrs. Jennifer Johnson in the Youth Service Center in order to participate.  

SHS Basketball Homecoming SHS Basketball Homecoming Court

The 2018 Somerset High School Basketball Homecoming Queen will be crowned at the Somerset Madison Southern basketball game on Monday, January 29, 2018.  Senior candidates for homecoming queen are: Marissa Vaught, Cianna Smith, Natalee Turpen, Haley Patterson, Ella Corder, Maddie Purcell, Emily Spears, Raegan Henderson, and Katie Ulrich. 

Advanced Marketing Class Visits The Center SHS Advanced Marketing Class


Students from Somerset High School’s Advanced Marketing Class were given a tour of The Center for Rural Development by McKinzie Loutre, Events Coordinator.   Mrs. Loutre showed the students around the facility where they got to see the different areas that can be used for events.  Also, Mrs. Loutre explained the main roles of the Center which include programs to promote and educate the community in the following areas:  Arts and Culture, Leadership, Technology, and Public Safety.

As we approach spring registration Ms. Amy Walters, Guidance Counselor and Kristi Jenkins, Gear-Up Academic Specialist took all freshman to tour the Area Technology Center.  Then students were given the opportunity to tour Somerset Community College North Campus, South Campus or Walmart Distribution Center in London.

Participating STRIDES students completed mock interviews at the Pulaski County Public Library with local business leaders. 

SHS Essay Winners Essay Contest Winners

Somerset High School Youth Service Center and School Resource Officer sponsored an essay contest titled “The Courage It Takes.”  Students wrote essays about the courage it takes being a teenager today and standing up to the peer pressure to use drugs and alcohol.  Winners received a lunch pass to enjoy lunch off campus.

Project Purple Speaker Project Purple Speaker

The Project Purple UNITE Club was started during the 2015-2016 school year with 40 members.  The club has now grown to over 150 members.  Project Purple meets once a month, has special guest speakers, and games for the students to participate in.

SHS Alumni Association (Women of 69) is offering a scholarship for SHS graduates. Students must have a cumulative 95% attendance rate to apply: Cannot have missed more than an average of 8 days per school year and plan to attend an in-state college/institution of higher learning. TELL Kentucky Survey Drawing Winner TELL Survey

Somerset Principal Wesley Cornett and Assistant Principal Charlie Brock accepted a $500 check for Somerset High School being the school winner in the March 31 TELL Kentucky Survey drawing. Mr. Cornett said the school will use the money to hold a rib-eye steak dinner for all the teachers "to show our appreciation." More than 81% of SHS teachers took the 2017 survey, which Mr. Cornett said "is very important, because we use the survey data in our planning." Congratulations, Somerset High! It's a great day to be a Jumper!

Attention 11th grade students/parents:

On the morning of Wednesday March 15th,  all 11th grade students will be completing pre-ACT answer sheet information.

The ACT will be given to all 11th grade students beginning at 8:05am on Tuesday March 21st at no cost to students.

It is VERY important for all Juniors to be present for both sessions.

Professional Education Preparation Program PEPP Program

Cumberland Family Medical Center is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior planning to attend a post-secondary school and major in a health-related field of study. The State Farm Good Neighbor Scholarship Program was established to provide financial assistance to high school seniors who plan to attend college, technical, or vocational school, but may not be able to meet the expenses of a higher education without such aid and often do not qualify for other scholarships.

Cyberbullying Prevention for Teen Scholarship Scholarship

 Parentinn has created the “Cyberbullying Prevention for Teens Scholarship” for high school students. The scholarship award amount is $1,000 and it is open to all high school students.

The Kentucky Federation of Republican Women grants a $1,000 scholarship each year to a college-bound high school senior girl who has been politically active within the Republican Party.

The routes within the city district will run the regular schedule and regular route.

  1. US27- East 635 – Keeney will be picked on Keeney at 7:00 AM/ Drop off 3:20PM

  2. Keeney – West 635 will be picked up on West 635 at 7:05 AM/ Drop off 3:25PM

  3. East Todd Road at Valley View/Hardee’s at 7:10AM/ Drop off 3:30 PM

  4. Johnny Rd will be picked up at Hilltop Homes and West 635 at 7:15 AM/ Drop off 3:35 PM

  5. Norwood /Mt. Zion will be picked up atAce Auto at 7:20AM /Drop off 3:40 PM

  6. Last pick up (in case missed stop) D&D Shell at 7:25 AM/ Drop off 3:45.

 

Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute

Students currently in grades 9, 10 & 11 interested in business/leadership with a 3.0+ GPA are encouraged to apply for the Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute (ELI) through the Center for Rural Development. The application deadline is March 16. Apply online at www.centeryouthprograms.com

SHS Semi-Formal Cecil the Rabbit  Somerset High School Mascot

The Somerset High School Cheerleaders will be hosting a semi-formal on January 16, 2016 from 9 p.m. until midnight.  Money raised will go toward the cost of Nationals.  Ticket will be $10 per person and be available for purchase at lunch.

Keeley Thomas served as a FRYSC AmeriCorps service member with Somerset High School Youth Service Center for the 2017-2018 school year. 

Murray State University’s Commonwealth Honors Academy

Murray State University’s Commonwealth Honors Academy will be held June 9 to June 30, 2018. The Academy brings together 120 rising high school seniors for three weeks in an interdisciplinary living-learning environment. Upon completion of the academy, students will: Receive 6 hours of university studies credit; have the opportunity to take an additional six hours of tuition-free university courses at MSU during their senior year; be awarded a four-year $2,000 renewable housing/leadership scholarship to attend MSU. Students must have an ACT composite of 25 (or SAT,PSAT equivalent) and a minimum 3.5 GPA. Applications and additional information can be found at http://www.murraystate.edu/cha. The student application deadline is March 1, 2018.

ASVAB Testing

The ASVAB will be given at SHS on Wednesday, November 29 at 8:15am. Any student interested in taking the test must sign up in the SHS Counseling Office by the end of the school day on Friday, November 17.

SHS Students Attend National Appalachian Student Leadership Conference Ohio State Leadership Conference

Somerset High School Gear Up students and Academic Specialist Kristi Jenkins attended the National Appalachian Student Leadership Conference at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, from May 17 through May 20.  

2018 Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, D.C.

Applications for the 2018 Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., are now being accepted by South Ky RECC. Competition for the all-expense paid trip is open to high school juniors, between the ages of 16 and 18, whose parent(s) or guardians(s) receive electric service at their primary residence from SKRECC. Students must complete a typed essay of 500 words on the subject “Why I want to represent South Kentucky RECC in Washington, D.C.” All essays and a completed application form must be returned to the guidance counselor of each school or SKRECC Member Service Centers by the end of the work day on March 2, 2018. Twenty-four semifinalists will be selected for a one-day trip to Frankfort, Kentucky on March 27, for the Frankfort Rural Electric Youth Tour. From that group, up to 12 will be chosen to go to Washington, D.C. for the Rural Electric Youth Tour, June 8-15. In D.C., students will tour national landmarks and learn more about how the United States government works. Applications can be picked up in the SHS Counseling Office.  

Burger King Scholarship

Burger King employees and their dependent children, spouses or domestic partners can apply to receive up to $50,000 in scholarship awards for the 2018-2019 school year.

ACT Study Session

Mr. Blankenship is holding an English tutor session after school in his room on Monday, October 23, and a reading session on Wednesday, October 25.  The sessions will last approximately 1 hour.  Anyone is welcome.

Freshman Visit Challenger Center Challenger Center

Gear Up freshmen at Somerset High School visited the Challenger Center in Hazard to experience NASA missions with the International Space Station through their simulator.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Program

Any junior or senior interested in participating in the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Program needs to pick up an application in the SHS Counseling Office. As of July 1, 2018 the State of Kentucky issued new immunization requirements for all students attending public schools.

Students are eligible to apply for National Honor Society (NHS) if they have an unweighted GPA of at least a 3.6.

Students Selected for Governor's Scholars Governor's Scholars

For the first time ever Somerset High School has eight students chosen to participate in the Governor’s Scholars Program. The program is a summer residential program for outstanding high school students in Kentucky.  Students selected to participate are: front row, Makenzie Clouse, Sarah Davis, Sufia Ahmed, Karcyn Brummett, Destiny Robertson.  Back row,  Will Perkins, Alex Ham, and Amin Katanbaf.

Applications for SCC’s Upward Bound Program are available in the SHS Counseling Office. The ultimate goal of the Upward Bound program is to prepare students to enter and complete post-secondary education.
