Principal's Message

Welcome to Somerset High School and the 2016-2017 school year; My name is Wesley M. Cornett and I have the distinct honor to serve as the Principal of the oldest and one of the most storied and successful high schools in the state of Kentucky—Somerset High School, Home of the Jumpers, est. 1888-- I just wanted to talk about our school and all of the efforts our students and staff have put forth to make this time in Somerset’s history one of, if not the most successful academic era in our history. We saw our composite ACT score increase from 20 last year to 20.84 this year; We saw pass rates on our KOSSA scores increase to 52% pass rates in Business Management, 86% pass rate in Marketing and 83% pass rate in Family and Consumer Science.

Our End of Course Assessments (EOC) scores saw the greatest increase with---58.2% of our students scoring proficient in Algebra II, an increase of 11%; 43.1 % of our Biology students scored proficient with a 10% increase; 72% of our English II students scored proficient with an increase of 14% and US History had 62.7% of students scoring proficient with an increase of 7.2%. We have increased over 40% of our students scoring proficient on our EOC’s! College and Career Readiness (CCR) is also another important piece of data we work towards in terms of our students meeting readiness benchmarks. I am most proud to say our 2016 graduating Senior class scored 119/120 possible CCR points, putting us at over 99% CCR for our school.

It is hard to put into words how proud I am and the joy I have to see our students learning like they are at a deeper level than ever before and reaching proficiency mastery. I am very involved on the state level in our state administrators association, our local administrators cooperative and was selected to serve on one of the Commissioner’s task force; I get asked often about “what are we doing differently” than other high schools in terms of teaching and learning, using data to drive instruction and novice reduction. One of the primary things I tell them is that we never forget that data driven instruction does not take place without the relationship building and investment in our students.

I want you to know that when I say that I have NEVER worked with a staff like we have at SHS before, I truly mean it! I am starting my 19th year as a high school principal and I still wake up each day and can’t wait to come to SHS—I truly love and am honored to get to do this each day of my life. We have even greater goals for the 2016-17 school year and look forward to see all that our students will be able to accomplish in the classroom, on the stage, on our fields and on our courts. As we say often around here, “It is truly a great day to be a Jumper!”
